Every portrait is a lesson
\nin what the portrayed
\nwishes you to see<\/p>\n

take this one hanging here,
\nthe bold and doughty captain
\nhis falcon on his shoulder,
\na sword at one hip,
\na book hanging from a baldric
\nat the other<\/p>\n

how firm his grasp
\nupon his rolled-up map
\nhow keen his gaze
\nupon the horizon
\nhow stern his stance
\nupon the stones of the quay<\/p>\n

That’s what he wants you to see
\nbut there are little things
\nthe artist did
\nto call it all into question<\/p>\n

the falcon wears no hood, it’s true
\nbut rather a jeweled collar
\nwhich no bird would ever tolerate
\nthe bird’s a fiction, the art cries out\u2014
\nthe map is rumpled from the pressure of his hand
\nhis proud blue coat? It shows no wear;
\nand the jewels upon his right hand
\nshow more care than for his sword.<\/p>\n

This proud captain, lord of all he surveys,
\nwants you to think him stern and bold\u2014
\nthe artist wants you to reconsider
\nsigning on with the crew inside his hold.<\/p>\n

Deborah L. Davitt was raised in Nevada, but currently lives in Houston, Texas with her husband and son. Her prize-winning poetry has appeared in over fifty journals, including F&SF <\/em>and Asimov\u2019s<\/em>. Karol\u00edna Wellartov\u00e1 is a Czech artist, painter creating images predominantly with the wildlife themes, nature studies and the literary characters. She\u2019s mostly inspired by the curious shapes and a materials from the nature, but the main source still comes from literature.<\/span><\/p>\n

From a young age she tried to express herself and her observations on paper.\u00a0 Painting and drawing were always the most important thing for her and visiting the local art school helped her understand the new techniques and the science of the colour mediums. She\u2019s the award winning artist for \u201cBest Book Cover in 2015\u201d in Czechia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
