They’ll tell you angels came, or Arthur rode<\/p>\n
from Avalon to turn the German tide<\/p>\n
at our beleaguered trenches.\u00a0 Naught besides<\/p>\n
a miracle had saved us — one bestowed<\/p>\n
all unsuspected.\u00a0 Yet a few who saw<\/p>\n
more clearly through that smoke & Belgian mud<\/p>\n
roiled up around us\u00a0knew<\/em>.\u00a0 Our fresh-spilled blood<\/p>\n had summoned thirsting shadows from the maw<\/p>\n of legend.\u00a0 Not for us, but for the foe,<\/p>\n they ranged across that battlefield to claim<\/p>\n their prizes.\u00a0 Snatching, scavenging remains,<\/p>\n they snarled at us with features bleached as snow,<\/p>\n revealing at the last their rightful name:<\/p>\n those Hunnish hags, the Choosers of the Slain.<\/p>\n ________________________________________<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Ann K.
