DEATH’S HUNGER

DEATH’S HUNGER, by Bader M. Alsadeqi, artwork by Gary McClusky

A soldier sent to do battle,

Now a survivor still standing.

Cold of heart and soul was I,

As the rest of my brethren lay dying.

Forced to a road home

Under cold and bitter night,

I found my life ending

By scavengers in plain sight.

In death I still suffered unfairly,

Not by any sort of physical pain,

Rather, the cruel, lingering anger,

The desire for revenge I seek to gain.

My murderers robbed me of life,

And now all I wanted was to kill.

Thus, like a fool, I made a choice,

Not caring for any heaven or hell.

I awoke to the pain of new existence,

To what appeared to be a crypt;

A room of decay and darkness,

Where my grave no longer provides respite.

Now clammy with festering wounds,

I felt only malice from the sunlight.

The world changed my eyes,

Bringing me no comfort, only blight.

No hunger, pain, or weakness will hold bar,

I would find my slayers without hesitation.

When I find them, they will regret

Being the cause of my new resurrection.

In blackest night, I came to them,

Their faces etched upon my memory.

My mind devoid of thought,

Save for one of directed savagery.

Shadows painted in crimson,

And no God barred the fated.

There was no greater release

Than that of vengeance sated.

The quest was over,

The killers have died.

Now on to the road I walk,

Seeking true death I denied.
