May has arrived and with it Heroic Fantasy Quarterly issue #56, and oh we’ve got such sights to show you!  We bring you three stories, two poems, with art and The Bard returning to do audio.  We’ve got news on our first-ever comic, and news on both our upcoming kickstarter and our first-ever S&S writing workshop!

Fiction Contents

Red-Autumn Seeks His Father’s Bones, by Jonathan Olfert.  We start off in the stone age with this outstanding tale.  Red-Autumn’s life was thrown off track by the usurpation of the sorcerer king Loshar Shon and now Red-Autumn ventures into Loshar Shon’s tomb to put things to rights.

Pagan Fires, by Rev. Joe Kelly.  17th century adventurer Conor Dubh, a follower of old gods, continues his travels across England. The estate of Lord Drummond is under siege by a horror out of legend and only a near horror like Conor Dubh can stand against it.

The Blade’s Bargain, by Robert Luke Wilkins.  Savander of the First Blades  is cursed with a small amount of skill as a sorcerer, but that ember cannot grow into a flame.  But there are many forcer involved in Savander’s world and there are deals that can be made; and with an invasion on the way, deals lead to deals lead to an excellent story!

Poetry Contents

The Unbitten Fruit, by Oliver Smith.
Time and the tomb and sorcery all combine in this excellent poem of lost love.

The Gobbler Raid, by Aidan Redwing.
Creatures of the night and deep caves plot their revenge on the world of men!

New Comic!

After a lot of talk and planning we’ve finally launched our first monthly comic strip.   We start strong with Gary McClusky’s take on Robert E. Howard’s Spear and Fang!  We plan on updating the tale every month, so check back in and watch the tale unfold!

Artwork

Clearly a place like Jereme Peabody’s “Sunlit Ruins” just cries out for danger and adventure.  I mean, crumbling ruins?  Yes please!  You know you couldn’t resist.

Jereme is a software engineer in the DC area and is also a freelance concept artist working mostly on video games and books.  He started his artistic career dabbling with sculpting, pencils, and even still-life oil painting.  As tablets became available, he crossed over from traditional art to digital by first digitally painting still-lifes, then through experimentation and practice, transitioned to landscapes and fantasy.

Tales From Around The Fire
